Like many fans of the genre, most of my favorite movies come from the days of yore, particularly the Golden Age of the 70's and 80's. And, while there are some notable entries from the 1990's, horror films in general sort of died out a bit with the age of grunge and independent cinema.
Now, of course, a majority of the mainstream horror movies are either remakes or movies in which the old practical effects have been replaced by CGI-fests. That's not to say they're all bad or anything, but I really enjoy the interesting independent films that stray away from this formula. Trailer Park of Terror, of course, got its own thread, but I thought it would be neat to talk movie recommendations that center around the past decade.
Some of my favorites:
Fido (2006) : I think this is just hysterically funny, and an interesting take on the zombie sub-genre.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) : This seems like one of those movies that people either love or hate, possibly because it's far more light-hearted than horror fans are used to. I think it's an excellent homage to the slasher sub-genre, plus it features Robert Englund.
Devil's Den (2006) : It seems like very few people have ever even heard of this. The plot bears a lot of similarities to From Dusk Til Dawn and is very dialogue-heavy, somewhat like many of the independent movies of the early 90's. The pluses: it contains a great homage to the Japanese Zatoichi movies, it stars Ken Foree and Devon Sawa, it uses mostly practical effects instead of CGI, and it does have some pretty nice action sequences.
What else?

I really liked Fido and Behind the Mask, but I haven't heard of Devil's Den.
It's hard for me to think of many recent horror movies that I've liked so much that i'd recommend to someone. A movie that i've wanted to watch, and tried to watch twice, is Undead. I believe it's from Australia. From what i've seen of it it's pretty good, but both of the times i've tried to watch it i've ended up falling asleep. I don't think that means that it's not a good movie though. It's just that both times i've tried to watch it, it has been late at night or I hadn't slept enough the night before. Has anyone seen Undead and should I try to watch it for a third time?

I know exactly which movie you're talking about; I picked up a used copy of Undead a few years back and it's an excellent over-the-top Australian zombie flick. It is very bizarre, though, especially when the aliens start popping up. Marion, the survivalist guy, is sort of a modern version of Ash from Evil Dead; while Ash never seems to run out of bullets (or gasoline), Marion never seems to run out of guns. He even manages to hide a couple of guns on him while buck naked.
I should also mention May (2002), starring Angela Bettis and Jeremy Sisto, with an excellent cameo by James Duval. I imagine a lot of people are already familiar with it, but it's another movie worth a watch for fans of offbeat independent horror cinema.

While these is a lot of shit that has been out in the last decade or so there are some fantastic movies too.
I'll agree with Undead, Fido, and Behind the Mask, personally I hated May, but to each their ow.
Other fantastic films of the last few years: House of 1000 Corpses and The Devils Rejects The Descent Inside Jack Brooks Monster Slayer Satan's Little Helper Feast Dawn of the Dead remake Hatchet Shaun of the Dead
Too many to list.

I saw Satan's Little Helper not too long ago and I was surprised. I thought it was good and Satan's mask was really creepy.

I just added Satan's Little Helper, Inside and Jack Brooks to the netflix list. Horror is the one genre that I can't seem to get enough of, good or bad.
I dig Feast--such a completely fucked up movie--but I'm still debating on whether or not to check out the sequels. Anyone else seen 'em?
I think the movie Slither is worth mentioning as well. I think the only other thing I've seen Michael Rooker in is Mallrats, and I keep waiting for Elizabeth Banks to make it big. She's definitely got the looks.

'Behind the Mask' is the shit! I saw it in the cheap bin at a local store and rolled the dice with it... which is risky as hell! More often then not I've had that roll come up snake-eyes on me... I friend turned me onto 'May' and I thought it was a wonderful flick - but I haven't been able to find the damn thing for sale anywhere... The 'After Dark Films "8 Films to Die For"' flicks aren't all bad - The 1st 'Final Destination' was pretty watchable, as well as 'Saw' - but they are milking that franchise to death in my humble opinion... And anyhting Guillermo del Toro touches is pure gold in my eyes. If fact, I'm looking forward to his take on the 'Frankenstein' and 'Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde' stories. As well as the upcoming 'The Wolf Man' and 'Creature From the black Lagoon' remakes - something I thought I'd never hear myself say...

The Feast sequels are pretty good, not as much as the original, but I would call the Feast Series the "Evil Dead" of this generation. As for "Inside", preapre for some of the best, most fucked up gore you will ever see.

I didn't like Feast so i'm not sure there's a point to seeing the sequels.
I've only seen a few of the After dark horror fest movies, but I agree they have been pretty decent. Gravedancers, Dark Ride, and Mulberry Street were all pretty good. I didn't like Wicked Little Things and Unearthed though. Has anyone here seen The Hamiltons? I thought it looked interesting, but I haven't seen it yet.

I'm back. Finally saw some of the movies mentioned above.
Satan's Little Helper wasn't too bad, considering how low the budget appeared to have been. Amanda Plummer was very good in it, and some of the lines had me cracking up (Jesus is Satan!). I can honestly say it was unique and worth a look, although it's probably not something I'll be adding to my collection.
Inside was, as promised, exceptionally fucked up. I went over to the board at IMDb shortly after watching it and, just to stir up some trouble, posted something about it being a great zombie flick. Now mind you, I get that it's not really a zombie flick. Nevertheless, I enjoy watching people react to that sort of shit. I'm kind of a troll.
I just watched Feast II tonight, and while the story seemed largely incomplete, there were a lot of elements that I did get a kick out of. For one, Clu Gulager is fucking hilarious. Watching Bartender beat the shit out of Honey Pie was one of the highlights for me. Plus, he had some of the best lines. The two Mexican wrestlers were awesome, too. And the topless biker chicks were a nice bonus. And, of course, all of the blood and maggots and over-the-top gross-outs and...well, you see where this is going.
I also watched My Name Is Bruce recently, and laughed my ass off. Sure, it was obviously shot on a shoestring budget, but Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi crack me up. Well worth a look for fans of Campbell. I'd love to see him show up at Crypticon.
