I'll almost always give a remake a chance, and I'm almost always disapointed.
Only 2 remakes have ever surpassed the original. Cronenburgs The Fly and Carpenters The Thing
There are some "Good" reamkes (good but not better than the original) Dawn of the Dead Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Hills Have Eyes Night of the Living Dead 1990
There are some "ok" remakes, not a bad way to waste some time but nothing super. Friday the 13th Quarentine RZ's Halloween
And then theres the "steaming pile o' shit" group, movies that are an abomination in horror My Bloody Valenitne 3D The Fog Steve Miners Day of the Dead remake

I agree. I almost always give them a chance, but end up being disappointed.
Remakes that I really like:
Dawn of the Dead Night of the Living Dead and The Thing is absolutely fantastic.
I just couldn't get into the new TCM movies.

yeah i usually give them a chance and am usually disappointed dawn of the dead night of the living dead the thing and the hills have eyes were all pretty good sometimes it's a good movie but not a really good remake and then most of the time I don't like them at all you rarely see something that's even half as good as the original

I definately always give remakes a go-round. I agree with you all that most remakes don't make the grade that the origanals did, but I would much rather see remakes of horror movie than what I usually go to the theatre to see. With four kids I spend alot of time seeing way to many cartoon movies. I very much enjoyed Hills Have Eyes and Friday the 13th not that either stand up to the originals. I did really like the TCM remake but I think that had a lot to do with my lust for the dead skin mask and the saw. I was easy to please on that one because I can never seem to get enough Leatherface.

Remakes are all very hit-or-miss for me, but I imagine the trend will die off in a few years. The horror fans are sick of them, and the general public is far too fickle with movies to keep the rash of remakes profitable for long. I've gone back and forth on whether or not I think horror remakes are a good thing. I do recognize my own bias, given that most of these remakes are based on movies that I fell in love with back when they were still fairly new. I think a lot of us 30-somethings may be a little predispositioned to hate remakes on principle.
I have to admit I rather like what Rob Zombie has been doing with Halloween, but that has a LOT to do with his casting choices--the guy has an incredible knack for assembling dream casts.
I dug the remake of The Hills Have Eyes, but that's mostly because it was fairly true to the original. The Dawn of the Dead remake is so different from the original that some might argue it's not really a remake (I've seen the same argument made with the 2008 movie Prom Night), but I did find it very engaging (not so much for Prom Night).
I haven't seen the My Bloody Valentine remake. Doesn't sound like I should bother.

I finally watched The Last House On The Left remake last night and it will go on my shelf next to the original. If Hollywood awards were not biased and all ass sniffing, this movie should get awards for cinematography and directing. The story aside, the film was shot beautifully and directed almost like a Hitchcock film. The brutality of the girls is toned down, (with the torture porn trend a couple years ago I was happy with this) but is no less shocking. There are some new ideas and twists that does freshen it up for fans of the original. The only thing that bothered me was the very end (no spoilers), it felt out of place and unneeded.

I have to agree with you. Normally I'm not that crazy about remakes and am usually disappointed. However I really like the Last House on the Left remake.

I'll have to check out LHotL remake. As for My Bloody Valentine, I actually didn't mind it. I try to remember that these remakes are not for the true fans, but for a new generation. Many of the remakes, (ex: Friday the 13th, TCM, The Hills Have Eyes), are not as bad as many of the new originals coming out. *cough* Jennifer's Body *cough*
